"While we have received testimonials and responses from around the world about how Power Balance Bracelet has helped people, there is no assurance it can work for everyone," company spokesman Adam Selwyn says via email.
The science behind the bracelets, makers say, is a blend of ancient Eastern medicine and new technology. In unscientific terms, metal in the bands increases communication between nerve cells and muscles, thus improving performance.
Studies conducted on the technology so far have been small, involving about 50 people per test. That's not enough proof that the power is more than mental, says John Gross, a St. Anthony's Hospital sports doctor and assistant chief physician for the Tampa Bay Rays
"The scientific evidence is sketchy at best," says Gross, who says a number of his patients wear the bracelets.
Regardless, Power Balance bands are sold in 40 countries and the company expects more than $35 million in sales in 2010, the Associated Press reports. Its few dollars hologram bracelets have been embraced by professional athletes and celebrities, including baseball player Shane Victorino, quarterback Drew Brees and reality princess Khloe Kardashian.
St. Petersburg-based Ampli5 is much newer, but uses the same sports celebrity concept in marketing its $25 band. Maurico "Shogun" Rua, a professional Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor is among those endorsing the product.
Gross understands why professional athletes embrace the bracelets and comparable products. They're always looking for an edge, physical or psychological.
He calls the power balance bracelets a "placebo effect," meaning it offers a mental advantage to its user. It's no different than golfers who swear they do best using a certain brand of golf ball, Gross says.
"There's a huge mental aspect to the game," he says. "And that's what these power bracelets are aiming at."
A recent unscientific review of Ampli5 and Power Balance bands by 4you was inconclusive, but did show that wearing one can affect your mental outlook. Teen and adult testers wore the bracelets for a week during regular workouts including yoga, soccer, running, cardio exercise and weight lifting.
Initially all the testers were acutely aware of their movements, energy and flexibility and thought something might be different. But the awareness wore off in subsequent workouts, and none were convinced performance improved.
The products haven't been tested by the Food and Drug Administration, meaning none of the companies can claim to cure medical conditions, including problems with balance, joint pain and flexibility, or fatigue.
Marketing steers clear of specific claims and avoids using the word "cure" in any circumstance. Gross says these otherwise harmless products would be crossing the line if they claimed to cure, or suggested people stop other medical treatments
"If somebody puts the bracelet on and thinks that it can cure their cancer or asthma, then that could kill them," he says.
American regulators are not the only ones watching the products. Earlier this year, Australian health officials challenged Power Balance's Bracelet claims, which led to the company's "no-questions-asked money-back guarantee" for anyone who doesn't like the products.
Power Balance says it's confident the bands will continue to be popular, and they've expanded the line to include necklaces and golf and baseball accessories. And others are jumping into the market, including Ampli5 and IRenew, at retailers such as Wal-Mart and Bed, Bath & Beyond,
Gross, the physician, says his job is to help his athletes maximize their performance and not undermine anything that might be an improvement. He has no proof the bracelets do or don't work, so he's supportive of the accessory, for now.
"As a practitioner, I have no reason to discourage them," he says.

The Power balance bracelet

 
PROFESSIONAL cyclist Bradley Wiggins used it at last year’s Tour de France.
Pro triathlete Andreas Raelert also wore one enroute to a second-place finish at the 2010 Ironman World Championships.
We are talking about Power Balance’s wristband – the silicone band that its makers claim help athletes perform at their best.
The company made the news last December after an Australian consumer watchdog found the wristbands to be a scam and ordered refunds to be paid to dissatisfied customers.
Controversy aside, there is no shortage of professional athletes who openly endorse the “performance-enhancing” wristbands. Wiggins is one of the many pro cyclists who sport the Power Balance.
Last year’s Garmin-Transitions ProTour team (this year’s Garmin-Cervelo) have been spotted with the band too.
The question is: Do the bands really work?
Together with eight other cyclists and triathletes from the Nanyang Technological University’s biathlon team, we put the Power Balance wristband to the test.
Throughout February and March, we wore the bands while swimming, cycling and running, and recorded our experiences and performance.
Personally, I was cynical. I believe there are no short-cuts to success and the only way to become a better cyclist is to get out on the road and log the distance.
Also, seeming product contradictions did little to assuage my concerns. While statements on the front of the box claimed that the product used “performance technology”, the fine print on the back of the box read, “results vary”.
Power Balance said the bands are developed in the US and embedded with a “Mylar hologram” (a type of polyester film), which allegedly mimics “Eastern philosophies” and optimises the wearer’s “natural energy field”.

Wesley college outfielder Rich Lober is sure the small charm around his neck is what he keeps him balanced and coordinated.
Whenever he plays, Lober wears his Phiten Titanium Necklace, and claims it helps him stay relaxed in the field, and he says several of his teammates use the product also. The company’s website claims the $32 necklace uses specially-engineered titanium to “emit energy that effectively controls your bio electric current.”
“I don’t know if it actually does works,” Lober said. “But I can definitely feel myself relax when I think, ‘I’m wearing my Phiten.’ I feel a little bit more relaxed than if I wasn’t wearing it.”
The Phiten necklace is one of many popular “performance-enhancing” accessories on the market, which are worn and endorsed by celebrity athletes such as the Phillies’ Shane Victorino and the New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony. Doctors and scientists doubt the product claims, saying the companies that make these products are selling snake oil.
“They don’t work,” Dr. Harriet Hall, a physician and medical columnist, said.
Hall said the concept of the body having an energy field is not supported by research, and that these companies are using scientific-sounding claims to scam customers.
“It’s the whole field of energy medicine — it’s bogus,” she said. “It’s based on the pre-scientific concept of life energy and they attach this frequency business onto it to make it sound like science.”
In recent years, the popularity of the performance-enhancing accessories has been on the rise.
The Power Balance features a holographic disk, and like the Phiten necklace, it is said to interact with the energy frequencies of the body
“It’s based on all those Eastern philosophies to create balance,” Selwyn said. It is designed to “help you feel your best,” although he would not say specifically what that means.
Locally, the wristbands are selling well in sporting goods stores.
“More and more people are telling their friends about it; they’re coming in asking for it,” said Nelson Duncan, a salesperson at Al’s Sporting goods in Wilmington.
Duncan wears a Power Balance bracelet himself and said he’s seen positive changes in many customers who try it on. Once, he said, a woman who needed assistance walking into the store became completely mobile after wearing the bracelet.
In the store, Duncan gives prospective buyers the “Power Balance test.” In the test, participants are asked to put their arms out and stand on one leg. The tester is then pushed and will usually fall off balance. Then, the tester puts on the Power Balance. When pushed again, the tester often does not fall.
“Whether it’s a mental thing — it could be — but I’ve seen it work,” Duncan said.
Power Balance has not released any studies on its product, but independent researchers have, and the results are not in the company’s favor. A study released in the March Journal of Sports and Science Medicine found that the holographic bands have no effect on flexibility, balance or strength.
“We replicated the testing they did, the same balance test, the same flexibility test, same strength test,” John Porcari, an exercise physiologist at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse said. However, unlike the Power Balance test, Porcari’s experiment adhered to scientific method.
Porcari found that the hologram imbedded bracelet was no better at improving performance than a 30-cent band from Walmart. He said the improvements seen in the Power Balance test are the result of the person being warmed up, not the plastic charm.
“If I try to push you over, and then try to push you over a second time, you know what’s coming, you start leaning the other way, stabilizing yourself,” Porcari said.
In January, after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deemed Power Balance’s advertisements to be misleading, the company admitted that there is “no credible scientific” evidence behind its technology. Later that month, Power Balance came under fire again for its advertising claims in a class-action lawsuit in California.
Now, on its website, the company claims the hologram “reacts differently for different people.”
Lober admits that his Phiten charm is somewhat of a fashion statement. He bought the necklace after he saw professional athletes wearing it in the field.
“The kids are using them because they see the pros wear them on TV,” Lober said.
Athletes can be superstitious, and according to sports psychologist Joel Fish, if a person believes in the claims of the charms, they may actually affect performance.
“We call it self-fulfilling prophecy,” said Fish, director of the Center for Sports Psychology in Philadelphia. “If you believe something like this helps you, then it can help you. It doesn’t guarantee it, but the belief can go a long way.”
Any lucky charm with a perceived benefit will show the same effect, Fish said. It doesn’t have to be a bracelet.
“It doesn’t substitute at all for hard work, repetitions, getting rest, eating properly,” Fish said. “But if you got all those other bases covered and you think this helps — that’s fine.”
While Hall says these products are not harmful, she thinks the companies that make them are being deceptive.

Duncan wears a Power Balance bracelet himself and said he’s seen positive changes in many customers who try it on. Once, he said, a woman who needed assistance walking into the store became completely mobile after wearing the bracelet.
In the store, Duncan gives prospective buyers the “Power Balance test.” In the test, participants are asked to put their arms out and stand on one leg. The tester is then pushed and will usually fall off balance. Then, the tester puts on the Power Balance. When pushed again, the tester often does not fall.
“Whether it’s a mental thing — it could be — but I’ve seen it work,” Duncan said.
Power Balance has not released any studies on its product, but independent researchers have, and the results are not in the company’s favor. A study released in the March Journal of Sports and Science Medicine found that the holographic bands have no effect on flexibility, balance or strength.
“We replicated the testing they did, the same balance test, the same flexibility test, same strength test,” John Porcari, an exercise physiologist at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse said. However, unlike the Power Balance test, Porcari’s experiment adhered to scientific method.
Porcari found that the hologram imbedded bracelet was no better at improving performance than a 30-cent band from Walmart. He said the improvements seen in the Power Balance test are the result of the person being warmed up, not the plastic charm.
“If I try to push you over, and then try to push you over a second time, you know what’s coming, you start leaning the other way, stabilizing yourself,” Porcari said.
In January, after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deemed Power Balance’s advertisements to be misleading, the company admitted that there is “no credible scientific” evidence behind its technology. Later that month, Power Balance came under fire again for its advertising claims in a class-action lawsuit in California.
Now, on its website, the company claims the hologram “reacts differently for different people.”
Lober admits that his Phiten charm is somewhat of a fashion statement. He bought the power balance necklace after he saw professional athletes wearing it in the field.
“The kids are using them because they see the pros wear them on TV,” Lober said.
Athletes can be superstitious, and according to sports psychologist Joel Fish, if a person believes in the claims of the charms, they may actually affect performance.
“We call it self-fulfilling prophecy,” said Fish, director of the Center for Sports Psychology in Philadelphia. “If you believe something like this helps you, then it can help you. It doesn’t guarantee it, but the belief can go a long way.”
Any lucky charm with a perceived benefit will show the same effect, Fish said. It doesn’t have to be a power balance bracelet.
“It doesn’t substitute at all for hard work, repetitions, getting rest, eating properly,” Fish said. “But if you got all those other bases covered and you think this helps — that’s fine.”
While Hall says these products are not harmful, she thinks the companies that make them are being deceptive.

The study showed people who walked their dogs generally walked about an hour longer per week than people who owned dogs but did not walk them.
The researchers also found the dog walkers were more active overall. So, there appears to be a strong link between owning and walking a dog and achieving higher levels of physical activity that go beyond the actual dog walking.
Other findings revealed middle-age people have the least amount of time to walk their dogs; younger and older people get the most physical activity benefit; dogs 1 year old or younger were more likely to be walked than older dogs; and larger breeds (over 45 pounds) were walked for longer than smaller dogs.
